Rhymes With Orange
Newsletter #15 - July 2004
Hi Friends!
Another charming-yet-infrequent newsletter guaranteed to educate and
amuse...
The highlights:
--Getting slapped in the face
--Censored strip sees light of day
--Philadelphia Pholks and St. Louis Success
--Speaking in Seattle
--Meeting my hero
--Those pesky e-mails
1. The setting: Northern Maine. A picturesque lake.
What happened: I was fly fishing (catch and release) off the dock into
a
spot on the water where the fish had been jumping after mosquitos all
morning. Just as I go to cast the rod again, a six-inch fish bites the
fly
and holds on. It then goes sailing up in the air with my cast and
slaps me
square in the face. Then it flies back out into the water with my
line. I
blink, feel the wet imprint on my face, then legitimately reel it in,
let it
off the hook of the fly, and put it back in the water. We are both
embarrassed.
2. A strip that was censored in May found a new life in the August
issue of
Utne Magazine! The strip was deemed too political by my editors-- now
you
can see for yourself. It's on news stands now. Haven't hear of Utne?
Utne
Magazine reprints articles from the alternative media, and it's a
great
read. http://www.utne.com/
3. Philadelphia pholks-- The Philadelphia Daily News dropped an entire
page
of comics, and Rhymes With Orange was one of casualties. If you live
in
Philly, voice your opinion.
http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/contact_us/
They ask for your phone number as part of the feedback form, so
please, only
Philly Phans.
4. Success in St. Loius! You can now see Rhymes With Orange in The St.
Louis Dispatch. If you've got friends or family there, give them the
heads
up!
5. I'm going to be in Seattle for a slide show and booksigning on
Tues.
September 7th at 7 p.m. Come say howdy! I'll tell funny stories, show
funny slides and talk about the funnies in general.

6. For those of you who whiled away a good hour reading the Rhymes
With
Orange web site, you'll know I am a HUGE fan of greeting card
artist/children's book author Sandra Boyton. And at this years
National
Cartoonist's Society Conference, I got to meet her! The best part is,
she
is as funny and fabulous in real life as she is on paper. It was
great. If
you want to while away more of your working hours, go to her wonderful
website.

7. I lost a whole bundle of e-mail after the last newsletter came out.
It
was the day Yahoo decided they needed a REALLY original interface page
for
their e-mail subscribers, so they put a pretty model on their sign-in
page.
How groundbreaking. So, if you sent me an e-mail around the time of
the
last newsletter and didn't hear back, blame the 20-year-old brunette
with
perfect teeth on the Yahoo e-mail page.
8. There is no number 8, but it reminds me of my favorite joke:
What did the zero say to the eight? "Nice belt."
Happy Summer.
Hilary
P.S. If you get two copies of this e-mail, consider yourself special.
